# Welcome to OpenTofu

## Introduction to OpenTofu

### OpenT**ofu: Streamlining Infrastructure Management**

Welcome to OpenTofu, an innovative infrastructure as code tool that simplifies defining and managing both cloud and on-prem resources. With OpenTofu, you can create human-readable configuration files that are easy to version, reuse, and share, offering a consistent workflow for managing your infrastructure's lifecycle.

### Why **Choose OpenTofu?**

* **Versatile Infrastructure Management:** Manage low-level components like compute, storage, and networking, as well as high-level components like DNS entries and SaaS features.
* **Provider Flexibility:** OpenTofu works with virtually any platform or service with an accessible API, supported by thousands of providers.
* **Efficient Workflow:** OpenTofu's core workflow involves writing configurations, planning with execution plans, and applying changes upon approval.

* **CLI (Command Line Interface):** The primary user interface for interacting with OpenTofu.
* **Configuration Files:** Define infrastructure in HCL (HashiCorp Configuration Language), detailing what resources to manage.
* **Execution Engine:** Processes configurations and communicates with cloud providers to manage resources.
* **Provider Plugins:** Extend OpenTofu to support a wide range of cloud services and platforms.
* **State Management:** Tracks and maintains the current state of your infrastructure, ensuring alignment with your configurations.
* **Workflow:**
  1. **Initialization:** Set up your project with necessary providers.
  2. **Planning:** Generate an execution plan to preview changes.
  3. **Applying:** Apply the plan to create, update, or destroy resources.
  4. **State Monitoring:** Continuously update the state to reflect real-time infrastructure status.

### Your **First Steps with OpenTofu**

1. **Install OpenTofu:** Download and install the binaries.
2. **Writing Configurations:** Define resources across multiple providers and services.
3. **Planning:** Review the execution plan created by OpenTofu based on your configurations.
4. **Applying Changes:** Execute the plan to create, update, or destroy infrastructure as defined.

#### Install OpenTofu:

Visit the [OpenTofu GitHub releases page](https://github.com/opentofu/opentofu/releases) to download the latest version of OpenTofu.

Choose the binary that corresponds to your operating system.

For example, on a macOS, you would use the following commands:

```
wget https://github.com/opentofu/opentofu/releases/download/v1.6.0-alpha4/tofu_1.6.0-alpha4_darwin_arm64.zip
unzip tofu_1.6.0-alpha4_darwin_arm64.zip
mv tofu /usr/local/bin/tofu
```

Alternatively you can use `brew`

`brew install opentofu`

#### Writing Configurations

* OpenTofu configurations are written in HCL (HashiCorp Configuration Language), similar to Terraform.
* Here's an example of a simple OpenTofu configuration to deploy a basic AWS EC2 instance (replace `terraform` with `tofu`):

```
provider "aws" {
  region = "us-west-2"
}
resource "aws_instance" "example" {
  ami           = "ami-0c55b159cbfafe1f0"
  instance_type = "t2.micro"
}
```

#### Planning

Reviewing the Execution Plan Created by OpenTofu

* After writing your configuration, generate an execution plan with OpenTofu to preview the changes:

```
tofu plan
```

This command will display an execution plan, showing what OpenTofu will do when you apply your configuration. This step is crucial for verifying the correctness of your configurations before making any changes to your infrastructure.

#### Applying Changes

**Executing the Plan to Create, Update, or Destroy Infrastructure**

* Once you're satisfied with the execution plan, apply the changes with:

  ```
  tofu apply
  ```
* This command will prompt you for confirmation before applying the changes. Once confirmed, OpenTofu will proceed to create, update, or destroy resources as defined in your configuration.
* After the process completes, OpenTofu will output the changes that were made, providing a clear understanding of the actions performed on your infrastructure.
